Joanne Lupton Elected to Institute of Medicine

Joanne Lupton, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Nutrition and Food Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Department of Nutrition and Food Science at Texas A&M University, has been named as a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
According to the Institute of Medicine’s announcement, “Election to the IOM is considered to be one of the highest honors in fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.”
Lupton was one of 65 new members and five foreign associates elected to the Institute in 2009. Founded in 1970, the Institute of Medicine has honored 1,778 individuals with membership.
"It is a great pleasure to welcome these distinguished and accomplished individuals to the Institute of Medicine," said IOM President Harvey V. Fineberg. "Each of these new members stands out as a professional whose research, knowledge, and skills have significantly advanced health and medicine and who has served as a model for others. The Institute of Medicine is greatly enriched by the addition of our newly elected colleagues."
Established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine has become recognized as a national resource for independent, scientifically informed analysis and recommendations on health issues.
Lupton earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Mount Holyoke College, her Master of Science degree in food and nutrition from California State University and her doctoral degree in nutrition from the University of California, Davis. She is a widely published researcher who focuses on the effect of diet on colon physiology and colon cancer with a particular focus on dietary fiber and n-3 fatty acids. She has been recognized with numerous academic honors at Texas A&M including, University Fellow, Distinguished Professor, Regents Professor, and William W. Allen Endowed Chair in Nutrition.
“I am delighted that Dr. Joanne Lupton has been elected as a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science,” said Jimmy Keeton, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Nutrition and Food Science. “This is a very prestigious honor and certainly brings recognition to Dr. Lupton, the department, college and university.”
Lupton is one of four Texans to be honored. Others elected into the Institute include Roberta Ness at the University of Texas, Houston; Daniel Podolsky at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas; and William Sage, at the University of Texas, Austin.
