Petrick “Emerging Scholar of Distinction”

COLLEGE STATION--Dr. James Petrick has been chosen one of only four world-wide Emerging Scholars of Distinction by the 2009 International Academy for the Study of Tourism.
Petrick is an associate professor in the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences in Texas A&M University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He specializes in tourism marketing and behavior.
He has been invited to present a research paper at the academy’s conference from June 6-11 in Madrid and Mallorca, Spain.
Petrick earned a bachelor of science degree in recreation and parks management, and a master of science degree in recreation management and therapeutic recreation, from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. His doctoral degree in parks, recreation and tourism management is from Clemson University.
He has been on the Texas A&M faculty since 1999.
Since joining the faculty at Texas A&M, he has received more than a dozen honors and awards including Professor of the Year from the National Resort and Commercial Recreation Association, and the Holland America Line Westours Research Award from the American Society of Travel Agents. He also was twice named as Professor of the Year in the department of recreation, park and tourism sciences at Texas A&M.
The academy is a non-profit corporation headquartered in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong. Its membership includes tourism researchers from around the world.
According to the organization’s website, www.tourismscholars.org, “The academy is an international organization created to enhance both theoretical and practical research in the field of tourism.”

About the department: The department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate degrees with an emphasis in park and recreation administration, natural resource management and policy analysis, and tourism resources development. The department has 19 faculty members and more than 425 students. Dr. Gary Ellis is department head.
