Aggies for Global Food Security

Prestigious Competitions, Fellowships, and Scholarships

“Almost certainly, the first essential component of social justice is adequate food for all mankind. Food is the moral right of all who are born into this world. . . If you desire peace, cultivate justice, but at the same time cultivate the fields to produce more bread, otherwise there will be no peace.” – Dr. Norman Borlaug

Mission

Aggies for Global Food Security (AGFS) is an initiative aimed at engaging students in a variety of opportunities related to the promotion of a food secure future for all. These challenges are complex and interdisciplinary in nature and require diverse perspectives. As Dr. Borlaug always said, in order to solve issues of global hunger and poverty, we need to “use all the tools in the toolbox.”

The purpose of Aggies for Global Food Security is to foster a community of students who are dedicated to finding creative and innovative solutions to the world’s grand challenges. AGFS is committed to building leaders in agriculture through professional development, networking, and entrepreneurship. We meet monthly to discuss global issues related to food security and to hear from different speakers. We also help students form teams to creatively tackle complex problems by participating in team competitions. Not only do we help students form teams, but we also hone their competitive-edge by providing monthly training through professional development workshops.

Scope of Initiative

The Aggies for Global Food Security initiative serves as a platform for connecting students to prestigious, high impact opportunities geared towards solving complex issues of global food insecurity. These opportunities include participation in competitions, fellowships, scholarships, elite conferences, internships, and other experiential learning opportunities. The goal is to strategically engage students within the larger global community of peers and experts working on the multifaceted challenges of food insecurity. By making these connections and having these experiences now, prior to graduation, our students have already begun to bridge the gap between ideology and action.

Program Objectives

  • Engage students in the global community committed to solving issues of food insecurity
  • Provide students with a platform, not only for making important interdisciplinary connections within and outside of the university setting, but also for learning how to facilitate real and sustainable change
  • Enable students to gain skills in both leadership and team collaboration
  • Build a strong network of committed students, mentors, alumni, and sponsors
