Welcome to the Benz School of Floral Design and the M. Benz Gallery of Floral Art, located on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Founded by M. Buddy Benz, with the goal of teaching excellence in floral design, the Benz school curriculum is based on the solid foundations of classic elements and principles of design. Beginners, as well as professional designers will benefit from studies of the latest techniques and trends in floral design.
Benz School classes consist of two-week short courses, one-week and two-day advanced classes. Two-week classes consist of lectures and hands-on instruction. Students are introduced to every aspect of the floral business – from corsages and wedding bouquets to potted plants and funeral tributes. As classes are limited in number, the instructors are able to give individual attention to each student’s designs. Principles and elements of design are discussed along with flower shop management…a skill needed for any successful floral business. Two(or three) day weekend classes consist of topics such as holiday and special event designs.
All materials, including flowers, supplies, and accessories are provided for each class. Students are encouraged to bring their own set of basic tools that would include a floral knife, stem cutters/snips, wire cutters and ribbon scissors.
The textbook used for most all of the courses is Flowers: Creative Design by James L. Johnson, William J. McKinley, and M Benz. This beautifully revised book, originally authored by M. “Buddy” Benz and considered by many to be the guide to modern floral design, is used by colleges, universities, high schools, and vocational programs. Both beginners and advanced students appreciate the mix of hands-on experience with thorough study of the textbook.
Graduates who complete Benz courses will receive a handsome Certificate of Completion bearing the names of the Benz School and Texas A&M University. Former students have often said that the Benz School diploma is their best recommendation. Advanced courses are available for persons who have completed the Basic Design program.
If requested before classes begin, Texas A&M University will furnish a transcript of the Continuing Education Units (CEUs) you earn at the Benz School. The CEU is recognized by employers, associations, and organizations across the nation. The Benz School also is approved by the National Vocation Rehabilitation Act, which makes financial benefits available to students who qualify.
